Development of biotechnologies

The development of biotechnologies has been identified as an important objective of the IP Montevideo. During the last three years important efforts were devoted to this. Recently the IP Montevideo created the Valorization Unit, which is mainly focused in the development of two major topics: 1) the valorization of the pipeline projects of the Institute and 2) the identification and development of new partnerships with Biotech companies

Valorization of the pipeline projects of the Institute.

The IP Montevideo is presently developing 4 projects:

  • The creation of an ELISA kit for the detection of Bovine Leucosis among Bovidae, which constitutes a major animal health problem in Uruguay. We have produced the recombinant envelope protein of the virus and developed an ELISA test, that is going to be soon derived to the industry;
  • The creation of a start-up company in association with Recalcine from Chile and the Institut Pasteur de Paris, to develop the patent of one of our investigators;
  • The creation of a quality control laboratory for recombinant drugs. This laboratory was created upon the request of the Health Ministery and
  • The Alianza Uruguay Genoma project (Uruguayan genomic alliance).

All these projects are going to be developed in the following chapters: i

Identification and development of new partnerships with Biotech companies

Following an aggressive policy to identify and develop partnerships with Biotech companies, the Institute has presently achieved research projects with two European companies (Danone Research, France and Biopolis, Spain), two Chilean companies (CTI Salud and FarmIndustria) and four national laboratories (Microsules, Celsius, Clausen and Santa Elena).
